IESA study says long-duration storage is central to the 500 GW goal and points to FY28 viability funding
A report by the India Energy Storage Alliance with Customized Energy Solutions argues that storage of eight hours or more will be needed to absorb India's growing renewable output, yet no dedicated funding route exists for it today. It flags an expected viability gap funding framework from FY2028 as a likely trigger for investment. The study notes that most of the roughly 195 GWh of battery capacity awarded or under tender is short-duration, and that about 2.3 TWh of solar output was curtailed over eight months of 2025.
